With all of the talk of how the government should legalize online gambling, some would argue that the U.S. government is ignorant for attempting to enforce a ban. Most people don’t understand that when it comes to the U.S. government, it’s not about the underage gambling or compulsive gambling, it’s all about getting the money. Yes, the politicians talk a big game, but the government is always looking for new ways to get money to pay for government services and their own pet projects.
The U.S. government has been able to successfully negotiate large payments from
various online gambling companies under threat of prosecution. Why would they want
to tax an industry if they can just wait for companies to build up revenue, and
then find a legal statute that would allow them to seize all of the gaming funds?
The U.S. government has showed that online gambling regulation is not needed. Yes,
an American should have the right to gamble over the Internet, but the DOJ is in
no hurry to legalize online gambling, when they can easily seize gambling funds.
On Friday, Kaplan, the founder of BetOnSports.com, agreed to turn over $43.6
million to the U.S. government, and a few week ago, the U.S. government
seized over $30 million in funds that were destined for U.S. poker players.
This is a growing trend for the U.S. Department of Justice, and until the people of
the U.S. come together and demand the right to gamble online, it will continue.
Online gambling companies that continue to take bets from Americans should be concerned that they may be next on the list. With the financial crisis in the U.S., the government would love to seize another $30 million from an online casino.
