Thai police have conducted an online gambling raid in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand and they’ve arrested four individuals that are suspected of operating an illegal online gambling business. Owning or playing at any online gambling site is strictly prohibited in Thailand.
The four men have admitted to operating an unlicensed online gambling site for over four years. Players funded their gambling accounts by transferring money to a savings account of a Thai woman named Sulakkhana Sitthiphon. Players received their account information via a mobile phone once the funds were received in the savings account. It is estimated that the site generated over $300,000 in gambling deposits every day. The police registered with the site and spent several weeks gathering evidence before conducting the online gambling raid.
In the raid, the police were able to confiscate over $270,000 in cash, gold jewelry, eleven mobile phones, four desktop computers, a laptop computer, and a 38-calibre pistol. The four individuals will face illegal gambling charges but they may even face money laundering charges once the financial end of the investigation concludes. The Thai government doesn’t want online gambling operators within the country, but they do very little to prevent their own citizens from gambling.
