With the US Department of Justice seizing online gambling funds, US politicians have begun ramping
up their efforts to legalize the online gambling industry on a federal level. Texas Republican,
Joe Barton is drafting a new bill to legalize online gambling within the United States. He has
consulted with the Poker Players Alliance, because this bill will primarily focus on poker.

Barney Frank has already introduced a bill to legalize all forms of online gambling on a federal
level with an exclusion for sports betting. Frank believes that a bill should support all forms
of online gambling, but he has acknowledged that he will endorse Barton’s bill in order to
further the cause and help Americans gain the right to gamble over the Internet.

Barton told the Las Vegas Sun, “This is not a Republican leadership initiative, but they’re aware
of it. It’s a sensitive issue, but an issue where there’s a majority consensus in the House and
Senate to make this change.” With Barton drafting this bill, it looks as if the Republican
leadership will stand behind the new legislation even if they have their own reservations.

The mark-up of Barney Frank’s online gambling legislation in the House of Representatives has led to some crazy amendments being proposed by the opposition to see the bill eventually fail. Representative Michelle Bachmann offered an amendment that online casinos would be required to restrict access to parents that are behind on any of their child support payments.

Gambling experts find it difficult to fathom why online casinos would be required to do a background check on new players, while no other business is required to investigate their patrons. It has been speculated that the opposition attempted to add amendments in order for this bill to fail. Bachmann argued the benefits of this amendment but she failed to provide reasons why theatres and other businesses wouldn’t be required to investigate their patrons.

Unfortunately, the government continues to think that they can control all forms of gambling by adding ridiculous amendments and other regulations. Online gambling has been accepted by the mainstream public, and the government needs to give more freedom to gambling businesses.
