Nick Xenophon is a crusader against online gambling in Australia. He has chastised the Australian
Federal Police for failing to enforce laws that prohibit online casinos from accepting any bets from
Australians. The Interactive Gambling Act prohibits an interactive gambling service for customers
in Australia, but Aussies continue to gamble online and it is estimated that Australian players lose
over $1 billion a year to online casinos that operate offshore.

Their are legal experts in Australia that believe the government should liberalize the gambling laws
and regulate the online casinos within its borders. Legal online gambling would bring in extra revenue
for the country as well as give law enforcement more time to focus on other more important issues.
Their is a surge in the popularity of poker in the country, and momentum is growing for the legalisation of online poker within the Australian borders.

‘There could be a hidden epidemic of problem gambling from online gambling that we just don’t know
about,” Senator Xenophon recently told the Herald. He does not support liberalising the gambling
lawsand he believes that if gambling is more accessible that their is a greater risk of gambling
problems. On June 20th, he will introduce amendments to the laws which would allow Australians
to reverse credit card transactions with online gambling sites. This would enable Australian citizens
to get their money back after they’ve placed a bet online and lost the money. This act would push
offshore operators to refuse bets from Australian citizens or else put them at risk of losing the
deposits that players made after they’ve already lost.

Germany continues to battle with the European Union over gambling rights within its borders. The
german government wants to offer online gambling to its citizens under their own terms, and they
refuse for it to be governed by the European Union regulations. In April, a proposal was sent to the
European Union by fifteen of the sixteen federal states in Germany. This proposal of gambling rights
within Germany came under incredible scrutiny by the online gambling industry when it was shown
that the proposal had many restrictive elements in the wording. The tax policy of 16.66% and the
licensing requirements of gaming operators were so restrictive that they’d hurt offshore operators.

On July 18th, the European Union is expected to give its verdict on the restrictive German proposal.
It is suggested by many that the EU will reject the proposal because it does not comply with the
membership rules that were setup by the European Union. The European Union supports free
commerce among its member states, and this proposal is much too restrictive. It will force some of
the top gambling operators in Europe to completely abandon the German gambling market.
