A Parisian-based online casino has been advertising their casino on the team jerseys of french football players. This may be a new trend in advertising for online casinos, but it’s a disaster for the officials at the games. Future matches may be cancelled or postponed if clubs do not remove the illegal sponsor logos from their uniforms.
The Lyon football club has been issued an ultimatum by the LFP (Ligue de Football Professionel). If the team owners show up to the game with the branding of sponsor on their player’s uniforms, then the match will not begin. Referee Lionel Jaffredo has been given the authority by the LFP to postpose the Ligue 1 match against Le Mans, if the Lyonnais (Lyon) football club does not comply with the rules. The rules may change in 2010 when France begins to regulate online gambling, but until that day comes, the use of logo colours on their uniforms of sponsoring casinos is illegal.
The government continues to cry foul and expects the team owners to respect the laws until 2010 when they change, and online gambling sponsors are accepted.
