The SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket was launched today and it has already achieved orbit status. This is a key milestone in the new plan to transport cargo and astronauts into space once NASA retires the space shuttle. The rocket left Cape Canaveral Air Force Base at 2:45pm EST. It successfully achieved orbit only 9 minutes later.

Obama and the US government will rely on private companies to offer space initiatives, and they already awarded SpaceX a $3.5 billion contract to deliver cargo to the space station until 2016.
