Obama’s Online Gambling Position

Online gambling insiders were thrilled with the prospects of an Obama administration, but they are beginning to have doubts that Obama will do anything to change the course of this industry. As of today, the government continues to crack down on online gambling, and not much has changed since the Bush administration. Nobody wants to compare Obama to Bush, but Obama’s promises of “Change” have yet to show any actuality in the online gambling industry. All of the Bush policies and prosecutions continue without any hint of change coming.

Obama did talk about his promise of a free and uncensored Internet and he even discussed his passion for poker, but could this just be the false hope that so many politicians have offered Americans in the past, just to get their votes? An early electronic polling of citizens by the White House staff has found that online poker legalization ranks highly on the list of the top technological issues for constituents.

The U.S. Department of Justice has ramped up its efforts to destroy the online gambling industry by seizing millions in funds that were destined for U.S. poker players. The DOJ is attempting to use the UIGEA to seize all payment transactions.

Their is speculation that the Obama administration’s silence on the issue of online gambling is due to it being a hot button topic that they’d rather let the Congress decide and just quietly sign into law if a bill makes it to the President’s desk. That may be the easy way out for the President, but after hearing all of the speeches about change in America, many feel that he should be more outspoken and let the people know his stance when it comes to online gambling in America.
