Norway’s UIGEA went into affect on the same day as the UIGEA was implemented within the United States. The norwegian government has implemented the ban on all financial transactions between online gambling sites and its residents. The European Free Trade Association had warned about the implementation of this new law, but Norway decided to ignore their concerns.
Norway has insisted that this new law is being implemented to protect against fraud and problem gambling, but it’s much more likely that is protection against foreign operators intruding on Norway’s gambling monopoly. Norway is rumored to have an aggressive marketing campaign for its state owned gambling establishments and they try hard to recruit new players into their casinos. The European Free Trade Association will soon challenge Norway’s new gambling law. Norway’s UIGEA will only be effective if the government can find a way to stop all illegal gambling.
