The National Football League, one of the most powerful sports organizations within the United States, has changed their position and they are now supporting online casino gambling in the US. They once opposed the HR-2267 gambling legislation proposed by Barney Frank but once the bill was amended to clearly state that sports betting will not be included as a legal form of online gambling, then the NFL changed their stance. The NFL lobbied against online gambling for years, and it has been rumored that they lobbied Republican Senators in 2006 to pass the UIGEA.
The NFL’s Vice President of Communication, Brian McCarthy, issued a statement: “We don’t oppose HR-2267 since it now includes language we had hoped for and we are pleased with the outcome.” While this is good news for the online gambling industry, gamblers won’t easily forget how the NFL attempted to ban all forms of online gambling within the United States while asking for a carve out that would exempt all betting on fantasy sports including fantasy football.
