The Malaysian police are investigating several football betting syndicates that are alledged to be involved with bets amounting to millions of ringgit. They’ve already taken down two betting syndicates, and they are going after the others as betting heats up on the World Cup.
Police have indicated that once they have enough evidence against the betting syndicates, they will arrest the sports bookies as well as the local Malays that have placed bets with the bookmakers. When the police put pressure on the illegal bookies, the crime in Malaysia drops.
Malaysia is investigating illegal sports betting within the country, but they are helpless when it comes to cracking down on online gambling where the bookies operate offshore. Gambling is illegal in Malaysia due to the majority of the government respecting the teachings of Islam.
