The European nation of Lituania has officially recognized poker as a sport. This announcement
will give sports leagues permission to organise non-commercial tournaments and allow citizens
to play poker without any concern that they are participating in an illegal form of gambling.

While Lithuania is a small Baltic nation, this announcement is just another push for the governments of the world to recognize that online poker is a game of skill with an element of luck, and it’s not entirely a game of luck like many of the other casino games. “This is an extremely important step in our work,” said Andrius Tapinas, President for the Lithuanian Sports Poker Federation. “We are receiving congratulations from many of our colleagues abroad and I know that we are breaking thick ice with our progress for similar international initiatives.” The Lithuanian Sports Poker Federation plans to launch poker tournaments by the end of this month.
