The stablemaster, Tokitsukaze and two sumo wresters, Goeido and Toyohibiki, have admitted to being involved in illegal sports betting from within Japan. They enjoyed betting on pro baseball games. They’ve submitted statements to the police and to the sumo association in Japan.
As this scandal rocks the national sports industry, rumors are that their will be some major fallout over the scandal. This could lead to the banning of all three participants in the sport of sumo wrestling within Japan. The sponsors of the sumo matches have considered reducing the cash rewards for winners as a way to penalize the wrestlers for making illegal bets on other sports.
Rumor is that most of the sumo wrestlers place bets on baseball games through the mob. The sumo association, its sponsors, and the fans need to put pressure on the wrestlers to clean up their act and that will be the only way to stop illegal sports betting by athletes in Japan.
