The Iowa Lottery wants the state government to take measures that will prepare them for the passage of Barney Frank’s bill that will soon regulate online casinos. They definately want the state to protect it’s gaming revenue when competition from the online sector increases. Terry Rich, representative of the Iowa Lottery has urged the state officials to prepare to defend Iowa’s right to tax internet gambling that is conducted within its borders.
The Iowa Racing and Gambling Commission, which controls the state’s seventeen casinos and three race tracks, is neutral toward the Frank bill, according to Commissioner Jack Ketterer. Terry Rich has said that the state should move to either license or ban online casinos and also set an online gambling tax before the federal laws take opportunities away from Iowa. It should be noted that many of the state governments will attempt to protect their own gambling monopolies, even if their efforts will most likely fail due to the global reach of online gaming.
