India is no stranger to gambling with the Mahabharat in 1500 BC involving a dice game,
as well as other instanced of gambling in ancient Indian history. Right now, the
online casino market in India is valued at roughly $5 billion and continues to grow.
India has 81 million internet users and nearly 75% of the users are from the
four major cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bangalore. Young men with
an age of 18-35 account for 76% of all internet users, and it is estimated
that roughly half of all internet users have purchased something online.
With no clear sign of liberalization of gambling laws in India, Indians continue
to gamble online at their own risk, but the tax revenue that could be generated
by the government if they legalized the online gambling industry would be enormous.
This lost tax revenue could be used to fund welfare programs for the poor or
educational programs for young Indians. Their are so many taxation benefits
from online gambling that India and other countries fail to implement.
