The European Commission has given the Danish Government one month to amend its draft law to regulate the online gambling industry, so that it is in accordance with the European law. Denmark has been given until November 9th to amend the law.
The European Commission found many key provisions within the proposal that are in direct conflict with EC law including the continued monopoly on horse racing as well as the banning of online casino access via ISPs and prohibiting all financial transactions. Also included is a marketing ban for online gambling.
The EGBA secretary general, Sigrid Ligne, said, “We welcome the European Commission´s continued resolve to ensure that all gaming and betting legislation in the EU complies with the core principles of the EC Treaty.” Denmark submitted the draft law to the EC on July 7th, and the EC just recently returned its detailed opinion.
