The Chinese police have confirmed that 210 online gambling crimes have been reported and 918
suspects are in custody from a police sweep that took place over a 13 day period. The Ministry of
Public Security (MPS) has reported that the gambling crackdown concluded on February 20th.
In recent weeks, the Chinese government issued a warning that they would be cracking down on illegal online gambling within the country. This included anyone that was operating an online gambling site, advertising an online gambling site, or had any ties whatsoever to any online gambling activities. Chinese government agencies and financial regulatory bodies launched a seven month campaign to curb online gambling within the country that launched on February 8th.
According to the Chinese government, this campaign will target “major and severe cases” and
any domestic or foreign operator that enters China would be severly punished for their activity.
China blames online gambling for disturbing social and economic order, but the government is
known for censoring and restricting it’s own people in order to protect their government power.
