California was the one US state that everyone expected to legalise online gambling, but legislation to regulate online gambling has been killed in the state’s legislature. The claims of the opposition have made some of the Senators nervous and they’ve decided to remove the bill from consideration until they can investigate the various claims being made by the local tribes.
With the UIGEA implemented, states are now able to decide if they want to regulate online gambling but the banking industry isn’t required to process gambling transactions. The estimates show that over one million California residents gamble over the Internet, and this could bring in over $2 billion in extra revenue for the state of California. The native tribes in California oppose online gambling because they feel that it threatens their income potential and it will take away jobs at land-based casinos. The new legislation would have set-up legal online gambling within the state but it would have made it a misdemeanor offense to gamble at an offshore casino.
