Brazil Proposes Online Gambling Restrictions

New legislation that is similiar to the United State’s UIGEA is being introduced in Brazil. This legislation has the intent of imposing a ban on all online gambling payments in Brazil. The Brazilian Senate will soon get a chance to see the proposed law which was first introduced by Senator Malta more than a year ago.
Brazil has a general prohibition over all gambling activites, but it’s unclear
how their existing laws would affect online gambling operators. The legislation which consists of the bill introduced by Senator Malta along with a companion bill would make it illegal to process credit card or debit card payments for any illegal gambling activity, as well as force ISPs to censor the Internet by banning Brazilian citizens from accessing any form of online gambling.
Unfortunately, this is a move in the wrong direction for Brazil. They should
just look at the UIGEA in the United States, and how it has been poorly
implemented and ineffective. The only thing that this new legislation will
accomplish is that it will anger citizens and attempt to take away their freedom.
