The Australian government continues to work towards their plan to implement a nationwide ISP filter that would block any site that the government doesn’t like. Some of the sites that would be included in this ban are online casinos, poker rooms, sportsbooks and pornography sites.
The Green Party in Australian politics has offered a gambling-friendly alternatives to the mandatory ISP filter. They’ve suggested that Aussie citizens should be offered an optional filter system by their ISP that could be used to filter out sites that individual users deem offensive.
This would give Australian citizens the freedom to enjoy online gambling or filter out the sites if they do not support it. The Green Party respects the free rights of their citizens and wants Aussies to be given a choice on what they deem to be offensive or harmful over the Internet.
Senator Scott Ludlam explained, “Filtering has a role in preventing accidental exposure to material that is inappropriate for a young audience. But rather than filtering a very limited range of material at the ISP level that does not include, for example, X rated pornography or gambling sites, let’s place an obligation upon ISPs to offer PC-based filtering solutions that can be customised to block a much broader range of content at the local, individual PC level.”
