Despite a public backlash and the media circus that is following this story, Australia continues down the path to place mandatory filtering on ISP’s throughout the country. It is to be said that the testing of these filters has gone well, and they will soon be implemented to block pornography, online casinos and whatever else the government censors decide is forbidden to Australians.
Industry experts have said that this will slow down the speed of the Internet for Australian users while failing to block all of the forbidden sites and restricting access to some legitimate sites. It should also be noted that Australians will be quick to learn techniques used by the Chinese people to circumvent the filters that have been censoring the Internet within their country.
This takes away the personal freedom of Australian citizens, and it puts the Australian government up there with Egypt, Iran, and China that have attempted mandatory censorship and control of the Internet. The list of sites and the rules for censoring a site in Australia remain secret, but the overwhelming attitude is that censorship won’t last long, especially when Australians begin to realize that one of their most important human rights is being taken away.
