The government of Antigua made the change to honor President Barack Obama of the United States on his birthday, and with hope that their will be change when it comes to U.S.-Antigua relations over free trade and gambling. This mountain was previously known as Boggy Peak and it rises over 1,300 feet above the Caribbean Sea.
Antigua has been involved in a trade dispute with the U.S. over violations of agreements regarding free trade and this dispute has been on-going for several years. This dispute centers around Antigua’s right to offer online gambling to Americans. The World Trade Organization previously ruled in favor of Antigua on this issue but all negotiations were stalled during the final term of President Bush.
Antigua is a poor island nation with a struggling economy. The U.S. ban on online gambling has caused incredible damage to Antigua’s economy. The people of Antigua hope that President Obama will honor the free trade treaties, so that they can earn a living by working for the online gaming companies licensed within their country.
