Arizona Republican Senator, Jon Kyl has lifted his block of several nominees for the US Treasury Department. Obama appointed people to fill positions at the US Treasury, but one US Senator decided to block the nominations. Many believe that Kyl blocked the nominees in response to the UIGEA delay on gambling transactions that was issued in December by the US Treasury.
Kyl co-authored the UIGEA which severly cripples financial transactions related to online gambling. Kyl has been working to ban online gambling within the United States for a number of years. The UIGEA was signed into law in October of 2006, but until now it hasn’t been implemented by the US Treasury and it may never be enforced due to the limits that it puts on the banking industry.
Senator Jon Kyl and Senator Richard Shelby have come under attack for blocking nominees for personal reasons, that have absolutely nothing to do with the position or the person being nominated for the job. Jon Kyl once called online gambling the “crack cocaine” of gambling. The delay in nominations to the US Treasury may end up resulting in the US Treasury delaying the UIGEA for an additional 6 months when the delay expires on June 1st of this year.
